Label paper 'stock' notes for Wineries:

Kantac Cast Coated – The majority of our wine labels are produced on a Japanese gloss cast coated paper, which is then varnish-treated for protection & effect. Most of the varnish options matt the paper down to a silky smooth finish. Some prefer a high gloss finish. Whichever varnish you choose, our Kantac cast coated paper is the lowest cost 'stock' with the best performance for moisture protection and anti-scuffing. At Rapid Labels we use Kantac, a repositionable-adhesive cast-coated wine paper which we consider, in combination with our own wine varnish, to be just about bullet proof. We are also now offering a Supergloss cast-coated gloss paper with permanent adhesive on a 30micron PET liner.

Clear on Clear Synthetic – Clear labels with clear liners which produce a 'no look label' effect. Bottling plants have to manage static and rigidity issues during application. But with a simple clean design, clear labels can look great on the bottle. At Rapid Labels we only use our proven clear P62/7 material & wine varnish which is a combination that works.

Laid Stocks – Textured uncoated papers with open-weave fibres which have a tendency to absorb moisture. Soft laid stocks look spectacular on glass, are appealing to touch, but do not have the strength or moisture protection of coated papers. Premium price.

But the following are some notes relating specifically to our exclusive laid stock options:

Hinuera – In 2007 Rapid Labels introduced Hinuera, an amazing cream laid stock which has superior moisture protection qualities to other laid stocks. Because the fibres of Hinuera are smoother, the print laydown and scuff resistance is better. It responds well to an all-over emboss, and high-build keys to the face stock nicely. Hinuera features an extruded waterproof membrane blended to the back of the paper. In conjunction with our own 'Option 44' moisture protection solution, the results in Cobb and Spray tests are impressive. Hinuera has been adopted now by many of our significant Wine Producer clients with spectacular success.

Limestone – In February 2008 Rapid Labels then launched an exclusive white ultra-smooth laid wine stock, called Limestone. Limestone is a textured white laid paper with moisture-protection performance. It is a response to a growing demand for a smooth white laid wine stock, and similar to an Australian paper named after a shark.

Schist – Since September 2008, exclusive to Rapid Labels, a spectacular silver laid paper with a smooth embossed pattern which is certain to be popular for sparkling wines, but will also look great for ultra-premium reds or whites wanting to position their product. Reptile-like moisture protection qualities.

Oamaru - And now since March 2009, the fourth in our series of exclusive laid wine papers - essentially a white version of Hinuera called Oamaru. We expect this to be very popular, with a renewed interest in brighter labels, and with Oamaru's alluring texture.

Also later in 2009:

Polyester PET Liners – Cast coated wine stock as well as Estate wine papers with a PET liner - available to top-end bottling lines where the extra cost of a synthetic liner is justified by fewer web breaks and the ability to run at higher speeds. Rolls of PET liner rolls (post-application) can also be sent to a depot for downstream recycling, sometime in 2010.
